What is S.O.A.P?
S.O.A.P is a method of reading Scripture and journaling that can be used with any Bible reading plan. It’s a great model for studying your Bible and applying it to your life. Below is an overview of what S.O.A.P. stands for and how you can use SOAP to enhance your "Group Up" experience.
First, complete the “S” by reading the Scripture. Don’t just skim through the passage but actually take a few minutes to think about it. Imagine what the person who wrote it or the characters who are in it must have thought or felt. Write down a verse or two that really stood out to you.
Second, complete the “O” by asking what did I observe about the Scripture? Write down what you noticed about the passage or what caught your attention. You may also want to write a summary of it in your own words. Mostly you will want to think about what God might be trying to tell you through it.
Third, complete the “A” by applying the Scripture. Write down how you can apply the passage to your daily life right now, whether it’s at home, work, school, in your relationships, your finances or anywhere else you feel necessary.
Fourth, complete the “P” by praying the Scripture. Write out a prayer asking God to help you respond and obey. This is a personal message from you to God so you don’t need to worry about using the perfect words. Just make it honest and heartfelt. Remember that God already knows your needs He just wants to hear from you!
If you are reading Philippians 4:13
“I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.”
You could write down a problem that you are struggling with such as a financial need or a relational conflict and then remind yourself that you will be able to get through this as long as you rely on Jesus’ strength and power and not your own.
